
Ilya Borovikov Ural stone-cutting workshop. Russian artist and sculptor Ilya Borovikov was born June 12, 1977 in Yekaterinburg. He was a strong, distinctive and handsome man, born on St. Peter’s Day. He should be named Peter, which in Greek means “stone”, but his parents named him Ilya. But still the stone became his life’s work, stone carving – his love. Even friends gave him the nickname “Stone”. Ilya dreamed of his stone-cutting shop, and he created it. He managed to unite around very capable, talented and creative artists. Unfortunately, Ilya Borovikov died in 2006 in a car accident. Many projects were finished by not less talented Russian master Grigory Ponomarev.

Ural stone-cutting factory was founded in 1996 on the base of Russian Cultural Foundation with the assistance of the Director of JSC “Unicum” Malikov. Young graduate art school Ilya Borovikov organized around himself masters of the creative team – stone-cutters who began to revive the tradition of Russian lapidary art, the figures presented Russian type of Carl Faberge.
Young Ural masters made highly artistic fine stone-cutting works, inspired by Faberge. Great influence on the direction of the workshop activities in the work of artists also had Ural artists jewelers AK Denisov and V. Konovalenko. For ten years (1996 – 2006) under the leadership of Ilya Borovikov was made a large number of small stone-cutting works of sculpture.

The stone-cutters who work in the shop – Grigory Ponomarev, Ivan Golubev, Sergey Zaplatin, Stanislav Shiryaev, Andrey Pavlov, Artem Lebedev, Alexander Emelianenko, Konstantin Antipin, Victor Korobeynikov, jewelers – Sobolev, Evdokimov, Chetverikov. In 2006, after the tragic death of Ilya Borovikov in a car crash, the artistic director of the workshop became Grigory Ponomarev.
The great project was chess set. Chess pieces represent two armies – Russian army of Peter the Great and the Swedish army of Carl XII. Twenty masters Worked on this project for 2 years. As artistic director of stone-cutting workshop, Ilya Borovikov was the inspirer, creative leader of a talented team of stone carvers, jewelers, grinders, polishers, and all those who participated in this project.
